Bonfire Nights in Sussex

Bonfire Nights in Sussex

Bonfire Night is an event loved by many! But as the evenings get colder and darker, it is tempting to hide away in comfort on the sofa! Here in Sussex we are lucky enough to have events that are definitely worth getting off the sofa for!

Throughout the county, you can expect to see fireworks aplenty next weekend, lighting up the skies and spreading autumn cheer! If you don’t fancy setting fire to your garden, here’s a list of our favourite events in the local area!

Lewes – Saturday 4th

Here in Sussex we are lucky enough to be graced with the biggest celebrated Fifth of November event in the world! Held in the local town of Lewes, thousands of people flock here each year to join the celebrations. The evening begins with a historical procession throughout the town celebrating the ancient traditions of Bonfire Night. The procession begins at 8pm and is formed of 6 separate bonfire societies who walk from Western Road to Boots Corner. Each society then splits off to hold separate bonfires around the town. These sites are ticketed so get buying early to avoid disappointment! Lewes Council suggest that this is not a child-friendly event due to the large crowds and dangerous nature of fireworks.

Lindfield – Saturday 4th

Lindfield Bonfire Night is a great one for the kids! It is a free to attend celebration that welcomes everybody. The day brings a Guy Building competition which is free to enter and fun for all the family! The night kicks off with a fancy dress competition in the King Edward Hall. The crowds then wander the streets with a torch light procession through the town. The parade leads to the Common where the Bonfire Prayer is read and the bonfire is lit. The evening is then topped off with a firework display that lights up the town! The event also hosts street collectors who raise money for local children’s charities such as Chestnut Tree House and Court Meadow Riding for the Disabled.
